JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: SUMMER SCIENCE TEACHING POSITION
Pacific University Upward Bound
Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to develop the skills and motivation necessary for success in education beyond high school. The program works with high school students who have academic potential but lack adequate support and/or academic preparation to succeed in college. Upward Bound enables 50 high school youth to live on Pacific's campus where they participate in academic, cultural, and recreational activities.
This position is for 6 1/2 weeks only, beginning June 17 and ending July 31, 2004. The live-in salary is $2100.00-2700.00 based on experience. Upward Bound pays room and board. Non-residential salaries would have to be negotiated. Salaries contingent on federal funding and budget negotiations.
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR LIVE-IN TEACHING STAFF INCLUDE: Teaching three classes daily, Monday through Friday in the above subject areas. Team-teaching or observing an assigned afternoon elective course daily. Preparation of a course outline for each class taught. Provide tutoring and academic assistance to individuals during afternoon and evening study periods. Supervise dormitory study hall each weekday evening. Co-supervise evening dormitory activities with project Tutor-Counselors. Participate in staff orientation and regularly scheduled staff meetings. Assist in supervising educational field trips and cultural activities. Completion of mid-term and final student evaluations, and final program
evaluation. Other duties as assigned by the Director.
QUALIFICATIONS: Preference to candidates with Oregon secondary teaching certification and successful prior Upward Bound experience/or experience teaching academic skills to non-traditional high school students, including students speaking English as a second language. Senior and graduate students who are strong in science and have the confidence to plan classes and manage a classroom will also be given serious consideration. Because of the intensity of our summer program and duties involving dormitory supervision and evening academic tutoring, priority is given to candidates available to live in during the summer session. Must have the ability to work successfully with people from varied areas, cultures, backgrounds, and personalities. Persons from backgrounds similar to Upward Bound students are encouraged to apply.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Submit (a) Brief letter of application (b) resume, and (c) three letters of recommendation to: Roberta L. Nickels, Upward Bound, 2043 College Way/#686, Pacific University, Forest Grove, Oregon 97116.
DEADLINE: Summer hiring now in progress. PLEASE CONTACT OUR OFFICE IMMEDIATELY BY TELEPHONE (503) 357-8169.
One of the unique features of the Pacific University Upward Bound program is its live-in teaching staff for the regular basic skills classes.
Although we do not discourage other candidates from applying, we do feel that applicants need to clearly understand the intensity of our 6 1/2 week summer program. A live-in teaching staff provides continuity and academic support in daily coursework as well as positive role models for students. Students (many of whom have had negative experiences with academics in the past) form close relationships with teachers as friends in this community environment.
Because the live-in teaching staff is unique, the Department of Education site visitor spent a great deal of time evaluating this aspect of our program, and offered the following comments:
"Core instructors live in the dorm during the summer program. This, plus the requirement that Tutor-Counselors attend classes on a regular basis, facilitates good communication among staff."
"As previously mentioned, the requirement that instructors live in the dorm is very effective. I did not see the tension between instructional and dormitory staff that so often occurs in Upward Bound. All staff were working together
and providing positive reinforcement to the students."
"Because of the live-in teaching staff, there is a substantial amount of individual attention provided, not only during class and study hour, but also in the dorm during free time. Students respond well to this environment and there is an Upward Bound esprit de corps."
Again, although we do not discourage other applicants, priority will be given to qualified teaching personnel who are available to live-in during the summer. Other candidates are encouraged to apply, understanding that salaries for non-live-in teaching staff would be adjusted accordingly.
*SUBJECT AREAS -- If you are certified and/or talented in more than one subject area, please note that information in your application letter or on your resume. It is possible that one teacher could teach two separate subjects. Be sure to provide specific information on your areas of certification and your strengths.
